A couple of weeks ago, I created a blog on wordpress, but it was more of a project than a personal blog, however, I realized wordpress offers several advantages over blogger. Despite that, the new version of blogger comes packed with a easy-to-use interface where one can add, remove and move around little modules to configure the look and feel of their blogs. The only feature I dislike about wordpress and that is probably the only thing holding me back from switching is the fact that I'd have to purchase a template in order to modify any of the code (Well, you could modify the code, but you can't save it). I guess when I'm serious about it, I will switch to wordpress and get myself a hosting service.

The Ladies Home Journal from December 1900, which contained a fascinating article by John Elfreth Watkins, Jr. “What May Happen in the Next Hundred Years”.

Mr. Watkins wrote: “These prophecies will seem strange, almost impossible. Yet, they have come from the most learned and conservative minds in America. Scientists believe they have found what they believe to be evidence of existence of water vapor in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system. The following article has been taken from BBC's website:

Water has been detected for the first time in the atmosphere of a planet outside our Solar System. The planet, known as HD 209458b, is a Jupiter-like gas giant located 150 light-years from Earth in the constellation Pegasus.

Other scientists reported in February they were unable to find evidence of water in this planet's atmosphere, as well as in another Jupiter-like planet. I came across this interesting article on BBC on whether blogs containing explicit/suggestive images or content be branded with a content rating or a warning? I personally believe they should, and in fact, a large one at that. Those warnings should be targeted for the adult readers who have developed a sense of conscience, not children.

It is the responsibility of the parents to ensure they monitor the internet activities of their children by installing family filters, or whatever is prudent to ensure they are protected from sexual predators, illicit activities and mature content. A British ex-hovercraft engineer has designed a fascinating piece of technology: A saucer-helicopter hybrid drone. Read on for more information. A link to a video of the saucer is provided at the bottom of the post.

"My son said it was a bloody silly idea,' said Mr Hatton. "Now I've proved it works, he says sorry, he was wrong."

The 68-year-old has won a contract with the US government for his 3ft-wide contraption, a cross between a hovercraft and a helicopter. It is being considered for surveillance sorties.

"Unlike a helicopter, though, this is aerodynamically neutral and you can bump into walls and not smash the rotor,' said the inventor.

"And, unlike a hovercraft, you can fly it as high as you want."

The dome-shaped object is powered by an electricity-driven propeller on top that pushes air over the outer surfaces, and has controllable flaps.[...]

Personally, I think the answer to the question of how the Pyramids were constructed provides a major breakthrough in understanding Egyptian architecture and technology. This is an article taken directly from BBC's website.

A French architect claims to have solved the mystery of how Egypt's Great Pyramid was built.

Jean-Pierre Houdin said the 4,500-year-old pyramid, just outside Cairo, was built using an inner ramp to lift the massive stones into place. Other theories contend that the three million stones - each 2.5 tons - were pushed into place using external ramps. Mr Houdin studied the problem for eight years and used a computer model to illustrate how he thought it was done. "This is better than the other theories, because it is the only theory that works," said Mr Houdin as he unveiled his theory with a 3D computer simulation.

He believes workers used an outer ramp to build the first 43 metres (47 yards) then constructed an inner ramp to carry stones to the apex of the 137m pyramid. The pyramid was built to house the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu, also known as Cheops. The Grand Gallery inside the pyramid, another source of mystery for Egyptologists, housed a giant counter-weight used to hoist five 60 ton granite beams into position above the King's Chamber.

"This goes against both main existing theories," Egyptologist Bob Brier told Reuters news agency after Mr Houdin explained his hypothesis. "I've been teaching them myself for 20 years but deep down I know they're wrong." Mr Houdin said that an outer ramp all the way to the top of the pyramid would have blocked sight lines and left little room to work, while a long, frontal ramp would have used up too much stone.

Further confusing matters, there is little evidence left of external ramps at the site of the Great Pyramid. Mr Houdin said the pyramid could have been built by 4,000 people using his technique instead of 100,000, as postulated by other theorists. The architect is now assembling a team to verify his theory on site using radars and other non-invasive means.

Not too long ago, I first read about a small tribe of people called the "Kalash" who reside in the valleys of Hindu Kush, Pakistan. By the looks, it would be difficult for one to determine the origin of this intriguing civilization. Some claim they are descendants of Alexander the Great himself, however, DNA testing has shown little contribution from the Greeks and it seems as though they are an aboriginal people. When I first read about them and heard about their pagan culture, I was highly impressed. A small population with such contrasting identities to their host nation have found a piece of heaven for themselves and have survived for centuries. Here are a few pictures of the Kalash people and some of their handicrafts. It will give the reader an idea of how colorful their culture is.

Kazakhstan has unveiled a new architectural project for its capital Astana - a giant transparent tent that will contain an indoor city.

The 150m-high (500ft) dome, designed by UK architect Norman Foster, will be built in just over a year. The tent is being made from special material that absorbs sunlight to create the effect of summer inside. Astana lies in the very heart of the Central Asian steppe. Temperatures there often drop to -30C in the winter.

'Difficult project'

The final shape of the world's biggest tent was revealed in a 3D model by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Underneath, in an area larger than 10 football stadiums, will be a city with squares and cobbled streets, canals, shopping centres and golf courses. The idea is to recreate summer, so that when the outside temperature is -30C, the residents of the Kazakh capital can play outdoor tennis, take boat rides or sip coffee on the pavement cafes.

Called Khan Shatyry, the project is designed by Lord Foster, who has recently built a giant glass pyramid in Astana. "Nothing of the sort has been done before, and from the engineering point of view it's an extremely difficult project," says Fettah Tamince, the head of Turkey's development company Sembol that is building the tent. Mr Tamince is nevertheless confident the company can complete the construction in just 12 months. [...]

What is beauty?

Every now and then, we hear one person say: "He/she is beautiful". In response, we'll hear someone say: "No way, he/she is ugly". There's nothing wrong with either person's remark, because I think the definition of beauty stems from one's perspective. However, at times you will come across people arguing about another person's looks, about how he/she is or isn't beautiful. I think that argument is ridiculous, because as I stated earlier, what one person may find attractive, may be equally repulsive to another.

There seems to be a vague, yet generally accepted definition of beauty for both men and women, the classic: "Tall, dark and handsome" for men, and "Tall, thin and blonde". When we get into details, there seem to be widely different conceptions of beauty. People in the West generally seem to find darker skin, darker hair and darker eye color more attractive, whereas in the East, people find lighter, blonde hair, and lighter eye colors a sign of beauty. It seems that that old saying: "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" holds when it comes to describing beauty as well.

Verdict: What you may deem ugly, may be beautiful to another, so respect the preference of other people by accepting their idea of beauty rather than indulging in a long, fruitless argument about how they could possibly find something or someone attractive to the senses.

Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 3.1 million (between 2.8 and 3.6 million) lives in 2005 of which, more than half a million (570,000) were children.

The concept of a World AIDS Day originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. Since then, it has been taken up by governments, international organizations and charities around the world. From 1988 to 2004, the World AIDS Day was organized by UNAIDS, who, after consultation with other organizations, chose a theme.

In 2005 UNAIDS handed over responsibility for World AIDS Day to The World AIDS Campaign (WAC), an independent organisation. In 2005, they chose Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise as the theme for World AIDS days through to 2010. This theme is not specific to World AIDS Day but also to the work WAC does throughout the year. The student element of the campaign, the Student Stop AIDS Campaign (SSAC), is a key part of increasing awareness among young people across the UK.

Student given multiple stun gun shocks by campus police

(ANAHEIM, CA, 11/16/06) - The Southern California office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) today called for an independent investigation of an incident late Tuesday in which a student at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) was given multiple “Taser” stun gun shocks by campus police.

CAIR-LA was contacted by several UCLA students who expressed their concern about possible civil rights violations by police officers.

The incident began when the student, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, was asked to leave a computer lab after he failed to produce a student ID during a random check. The entire incident was captured on video by another student. While being stunned, Tabatabainejad informed the officers he had a medical condition. [...]

What does Borat get right and wrong about his native land?

First, a disclaimer: My wife and I recently adopted a baby girl from Kazakhstan, so my interest in researching whether Sacha Baron Cohen's new film, Borat, presents a realistic portrayal of the formerly obscure Central Asian republic is more than academic. After all, would you want your daughter associated with a urine-drinking, wife-beating, cow-punching, sister-f******, prostitute-ridden, anti-Semitic nation?

Having said that, I assure you I kept an open mind while doing my research. My conclusion: Borat's Kazakhstan bears little resemblance to the real Kazakhstan. Little resemblance, but not no resemblance. Here is a rundown of the many things Borat gets wrong about Kazakhstan, and the few things that he gets right.

Language

Let's start with the man himself. Borat is not a Kazakh name (though there is a name Bolat). No one in Kazakhstan greets you with "Jagzhemash," which is most likely gibberish or mangled Polish. The official language in Kazakhstan is, not surprisingly, Kazakh, although Russian is widely spoken. Among the country's large ethnic Russian population, Russian is the only language they speak. And, oh yes, khrum is not the word for testicles, in either Russian or Kazakh.[...]

I was at work today and this girl walked in, with a freaked out look on her face. She ran up to me and asked me how to connect to the "wireless thingy" because she had a paper due in about 15 minutes from that time and she had to print it out, run all the way across campus and submit it to her professor. It was a midterm paper, so it was really important to her.

I asked her to calm down first, and instead of having her install the printer drivers, putting money on her account, printint it out, and carrying all her stuff all the way to the other end of the campus, I decided to print it out from my work account (unlimited prints) and upon her request, have her leave her stuff with me so she could run to her professor's office to turn in her paper.

She came back with a depressed look on her face: she had missed her professor by a few minutes. I then helped her email the document to her professor and dictated the contents of the email to her. I had her tell him that it was my fault that she got delayed because I couldn't help her connect to the wireless connection, which is why she couldn't turn her paper on time. She was so happy at the end and thanked me profusely for all my help. It felt good doing a good samaraitan. The simple smile of gratitude on her face made my day. I sincerely hope her professor accepts her paper and that she passes with flying colors!

Google purchases Youtube for $1.65 Billion

Google Inc. has laid speculation to rest--it will buy YouTube for $1.65 billion in a stock transaction. YouTube operates a wildly popular Web site where original videos appear in a range of quality from amateurish to professional. It will continue to operate independently after the Google acquisition "to preserve its successful brand and passionate community," Google said today. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.

Though YouTube CEO and cofounder Chad Hurley had previously insisted that YouTube wasn't for sale, his view changed when Google agreed to allow YouTube to operate independently, Hurley said during a conference call that included Google and YouTube executives this afternoon.

'A Better Experience'

Bringing YouTube into the ever-growing Google empire will mean that users have a "better, more comprehensive experience" when they upload, watch, and share videos, Google said. It will also give professional content owners more opportunities to get their work out to a wider audience, Google and YouTube executives said during the conference call. Slow pace of quake reconstruction

Musadiq Iqbal is one of the lucky ones - he will soon be moving to his new earthquake-resistant house after his old one collapsed in the 8 October, 2005 quake. Only a few are in his position in Katahi, some 50km (25 miles) south-east of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. In most cases, compensation has not been paid or does not meet the costs of the compulsory new quake-resistant design. Thousands in this mountainous region will have to brave a second chilly winter in temporary shelters.

Under the World Bank-funded government compensation scheme, each home owner is to receive 150,000 rupees (nearly $2,500) in three instalments to reconstruct his or her house. Those whose houses were partially damaged get 50,000 rupees for repairs. Musadiq Iqbal has used savings as well as his compensation and reckons the final rebuild cost will be 400,000 rupees. Workers are busy giving the house its final touches and he is hoping to move in just before winter.[...]

Dubai: Dubai Municipality has approved the master plan of the Dh250 million Great Dubai Wheel project.Developers say the wheel will be the tallest observation wheel in the world, and will be larger than the London Eye, which was recently voted the world's best tourist attraction. Work will begin shortly on the 185-metre Observation Wheel, one of Dubailand's key tourist attractions, which will welcome its first visitors in early 2009 and provide a panoramic view of Dubai.

It will have 30 orbiter capsules with a total capacity of 7.5 million guests per year. The project also includes a restaurant and condominiums.During the journey on the wheel, the visitor will be able to view distances of up to 50 kilometres. The master plan was presented to Dubailand and Dubai Municipality by Great Wheel Corporation, a company that develops, finances, builds and operates Great Wheels.

Currently, the group is working on various sites around the world. "Gaining the approval of Dubailand and Dubai Municipality is crucial to the development of the Great Dubai Wheel, and we are grateful to both for their unstinted support through every phase of the project to date," said Leon Heijkoop, representative of the Great Wheel Corporation in Dubai.
